Marking Knife - Additional Info

Age Restrictions (18+)

To purchase knives from this site you must be over eighteen years of age. It is a criminal offence to sell knives, knife blades or razor blades to anyone under the age of eighteen.

Thin Blade

The blade this handle is made to fit is roughly 0.7mm thick meaning it can get into the thinnest of gaps with ease. The situation I find this is useful is when transferring the tails to the pins when dovetailing. But in reality, it can be used for all sorts of woodworking applications, both fine and rough.

Rigid

Despite being thin, the blade is still surprisingly rigid compared to a normal scalpel blade. There is a small amount of deflection if you're comparing it to a thick Japanese marking knife, however you quickly get used to it. You will be surprised how little pressure it takes to score a thin, accurate, crisp line with this thing.

Double Bevel

I've often had people questioning how easy it is to use a double bevel knife as opposed to a single bevel. Mainly, how do you run it up against an edge, and how do you stop it from digging in? Realistically, this comes down to practice and gaining muscle memory when holding the knife at a particular angle. It doesn't take long to master. I can vouch for this both in my personal experience, and when I've observed my students switch to this design.

Sharpening

Sharpening knives often has to be done freehand, meaning it's very easy for a beginner to quickly make a dogs dinner of a marking knifes bevel. These blades however are easily sharpened. Simply dispose of the blunt blade in a safe manner, and replace it with a new one! They cost pennies when you buy them in larger packs and will last you for years. It also means you no longer have to feel guilty about opening packaging, removing glue, or cutting up sausages with your shiny marking knife.

Custom Handle

The material of the handle and ferrule is entirely up to you. Do you need it? Absolutely not. You can just as easily buy a cheap handle from Amazon to suit your blade and it will work fine. But purchasing one of my handles will help support me in what I do, and provide you with the luxury you deserve!

Finish

Your knife is protected in 3 different finishes, each serving their own purpose in adding to the durability, the feel, and the aesthetics of the knife. It takes a long time and a lot of care. If you'd like to know more about this process, see my blog post here.

I really don't want to sell this as a product you need to own. It really isn't. However what I can promise you is upon opening the box for the first time, you will be blown away by the look, feel and control this tool will provide you. It really will be a tool you can treasure for life.

Customers praised these replacement blades as "sharp & sturdy" with "great quality." Shoppers appreciate the four different blade shapes for various marking tasks and precise lines. The blades fit perfectly with marking knives and are described as robust. All reviews were 5-star ratings, with customers stating they will reorder.

Superb quality 👌

Having just recieved my marking knife, I felt i had to share my first impressions.
The quality of the knife is outstanding! The weight of the brass fitting means that the balance is superb.
The attention to detail with regards to packaging is also excellent, exactly what I should expected from Matt tbh.

I've been looking longingly at these for a couple of years now, trying to convince myself that the cost is worth it. I'm so glad i bit the bullet, I can't wait to start using it and I just get the feeling that using a quality tool like this is going to help me remain focused and committed to producing quality results myself on all the projects I have in mind !

The bog oak marking knife is a beauty.

The bog oak marking knife is very comfortable to use, leaves a clear crisp line, and is a beauty to behold. Extremely happy with this purchase. Probably won't be my last.

A timeless gift!

I am so happy with my marking knife! Where to start.. as we all know they are incredibly made, capturing the beauty of the snakewood. I bought the extra razors blades and very happy I did. I've already used my new tool to mark lines for my dowels on my 8ft walnut dining table. The shipping process to the US was a great experience too, well done. Thank you, cheers!

Inspires Mindfulness

Extremely well crafted, lovely tones and grain. I have many tools but only a handful that i take this much pleasure in holding! Yes it is an indulgence, but it inspires a kind of mindfulness, this simple beautiful, thoughtful, marking knife, makes me pause for a second every time i use it, It makes me want to centre myself before making the cut. idk I'm being dramatic I know, but fuckit thats genuinely what something of this quality does to me. Thanks for your devotion Matt

Beautiful knife

Beautiful knife, I had wanted a Bog Oak version for a while and I’m not disappointed. I use Matt’s knives in all the woodworking and crafts that I do and since the blades are replaceable pretty much everything and anything else requires a knife around the house. This one is my third, and I definitely don’t need three. I certainly don’t need 4 but suspect I will have 4 at some point. They aren’t just tools, they are works of art and are, in my opinion, worth the money even if all I could do was look at them.

Truly exquisite looking and solidly built tool

Truly exquisite looking and solidly built tool. Exceptional craftmanship and finish and a pleasure to use. And the packaging is beautiful with special care given to protection during travel. I pretty much buy everything online now, so it's priority-one for me that the package arrives intact and unmarred since sending stuff back can be so frustrating and time consuming regardless how good the product is. I look forward to buying more products from Matt Estlea.

This is a work of art

I cannot be happier with the Masur Birch & Copper Marking Knife. It is truly a work of art. I just completed a birch and African mahogany mini workbench for use on my apartment balcony and decided to reward myself with this gorgeous matching knife. I love using it and even just looking at it. It was definitely worth every penny!

Flawless quality

I watched the YouTube video of them being made so was already assured they were high quality but when it arrived it exceeded my expectations. It really is a flawless piece and I’m really glad I bought it.

Crack developing.

I really do love the design of this knife. The is the second one I own. Only problem is that there is a crack devolving in the wood right on the finger grip, and it appears to be getting worse…. I’m hopeful that I will be offered a replacement or at least a discount on a new one, especially since I am still waiting on a mallet and logo medallions.

Hi Andrew,

Very sorry to hear that a crack is developing. As we are currently out of stock of Ebony & Copper marking knives a replacement may take some time but we are also happy to offer a discount for a future knife instead. I'll email you to confirm and provide the discount.

As for the coins, our tracking info suggests that they would have arrived shortly after you posted your review :)

Regarding the mallet, we thank you for your patience, and we truly hope to be able to fulfill the orders soon. For updates, please keep an eye on our mallet tracking page: mattestlea.com/mallettracker

Hopefully that clears everything up!

London Plane

This knife is my 5th & Final. It’s hard not to keep buying them; Matt has improved and finessed the blade clamp/collar from the original and always uses stunning hardwoods. The cherry on top is that this purchase also helps a great cause.

Lovely piece of kit

After wanting one of Matt’s marking knives for some time I had to get this. The quality is evident as soon as you open the box. The consideration that has gone in to the packaging with cut out in lays for everything, Allen key, blades and the knife itself, is exceptional.

The knife itself is beautiful, made of walnut with a brass ferrule. The quality of workmanship is amazing, the weight is well balanced and the finish is perfect. The laser etching of the woodland heritage logo is a nice touch and donation to their cause is great. This is a knife that will last my whole woodworking experience. Thanks Matt.

Versatile, high quality- exceeds expectations

Was gifted the pink ivory marking knife by my wife in December 2021 and it is by far my most used item in my shop. Marking out fret slots on a fret board or dovetails, to hand cutting stencil material, this does it all. Very balanced and nimble. It exceeded all expectations and will continue to be the most easily accessible item in my shop. Quality is second to none. From the fit and feel to the finish, this checks all boxes.

Pictures don't do these knives justice...

Like the title says - as impressive as these marking knives look in the pictures, they are breathtakingly beautiful in the workshop. The care and attention to detail in their manufacture is obvious.

They are ergonomic for both left and right handed use, and are comfortably weighted. The ferrule is nicely machined, with the blade installing easily and securely. The ability to quickly replace the blade (instead of stopping work for a traditional sharpening session) saves both time and patience.

After initally buying a Bocote/Stainless knife, I couldn't resist adding a Snakewood/Brass to the toolbox as soon as the next batch was available. The temptation grows to add another to the collection...

The only tool I never lose

I bought a blue-tinted curly maple marking knife from Matt in October 2020 and it has followed me everywhere. It went on the journey with me of learning how to cut joinery, has helped me with construction projects, opening packages, leather work, making crafts…literally doing everything. It’s much easier to hold than my utility knives & box cutters, and the blades help facilitate a downward force that I haven’t found with double sided marking knives.

Even though I keep it nicely in its box, I’ve dropped the poor thing so many times and it hasn’t broken or even dented. The ferrule is strong and the screw never loosens. I bought a box of blades back in 2020 and still have almost all of them!

I love having a premium tool that has so much utility, and is still so beautiful after all these years. Matt even offered to re-tint it for me but I prefer the patina-it shows how much I use it! Definitely worth the investment! I’ve already got a second and I’m anticipating I might get a third just because it’s so nice to have them handy everywhere. 11/10 would recommend, excellent design and craftsmanship.

Functional and beautiful

I have blade holders but decided to buy this primarily as an appreciation for Matt's content. When I opened this package I was delighted at the quality, the beauty, and the balance of this blade holder. You can buy a blade holder for a lot less money but it won't give you this knife. The ferrule is solid giving the knife a nice heft and balance. Be nice to yourself and buy one.
