3M 2090 Scotch Blue Tape (50m - 24/48mm)

The Workshop "Tape-Clamp"

This is a trade-grade masking tape designed for structural workshop tasks rather than light crafts. It is stronger and stickier than standard blue tapes, yet it still offers a clean 14-day removal.

Our favorite use for the 2090 is applying lipping to the edges of man-made boards. Because the tape has a slight "stretch," you can use it as a mechanical clamp: simply stick it to one side, pull it tight over the lipping, and the internal tension of the tape provides the necessary clamping force while the glue sets. It is also the ideal companion for the "Blue Tape and CA Glue" method for temporary jigging and work holding. Finally, it can also be used when transferring tails to pins when dovetailing to create a high contrast layout, which can be helpful for dark environments or those who struggle with their eyesight.

  • Best for: Edge lipping, temporary clamping, and transferring dovetails
  • Key Feature: High tensile strength and elasticity for clamping force.

Matt's Honest Take

A few years ago, I needed to glue a bunch of lipping onto the edge of plywood. I had a lot to do, and not enough clamps to do it. So I opted to use masking tape to clamp it in place.

Unfortunately, I came back the next morning to find all the masking tape unstuck, and the glue join looking terrible, and vowed to never use it again.

After a bit of research, I became aware of 3M Scotch Blue, and let me tell you now this is THE tape you need for the workshop. For light clamping, such as lipping or temporary work holding, nothing comes close.

I also use it for labelling components that I don’t want to write on with a pen or pencil.
