Clean up rusty chisels and prepare blades for sharpening with this 360-grit Mirlon abrasive mesh from Mirka. It is useful for removing light surface rust and refreshing metal surfaces, whether you are restoring a second-hand tool or maintaining a favourite chisel.
Where it helps
- Chisel restoration: Remove light surface corrosion so you can inspect the condition of the steel before moving on to sharpening.
- Preparation before sharpening: Clean rust from the blade before working on the back and bevel with your sharpening abrasives.
- Finishing work: Also useful for lightly cutting back between coats of finish.
Prefer a rubber block for working on localised patches of rust? See our approximately 240-grit Abrasive Rubber.
Using it on chisels and blades
Work gently over the affected area and check your progress frequently. Abrasives can change the surface finish, so test on a small area first and take care around cutting edges. Wipe away residue before moving to your sharpening stones or plates.
This is a surface-cleaning step: deep rust pits may remain, and cleaning does not replace flattening the back or honing the cutting edge. After sharpening, dry the tool and apply your usual rust protection before storage.
