Shell Cordovan Ultimate Leather Strop
Shell Cordovan Ultimate Leather Strop
Crafted without compromise, this is the definitive finishing tool for sharpening purists. Designed specifically for ultra fine edge refinement, every element of this strop has been engineered to deliver exceptional performance, tactile feedback, and lifelong stability.
- Horween Genuine Shell Cordovan: Sourced from legendary tanneries, the vegetable tanned equine leather surface is incredibly dense, smooth, and virtually poreless. Giving you a smooth draw, with minimal rounding on cutting edges. This material comes at a price, but for good reason.
- Quarter-Sawn Oak Base: The strop is adhered to a Quarter-Sawn Oak base for maximum dimensional stability and weight. The quarter-sawn construction helps maintain a flat, stable working surface and is resistant to the occasional splash of moisture.
- Non-Slip Cork Rubber Footing: Elevated on a heavy duty 4mm ‘Crubber’ base that grips the workbench securely during use. Cork rubber is also resistant to moisture that may appear in and around sharpening stations.
- Optimized Surface Area: Generously sized at 210mm long by 80mm wide, offering ample room for sweeping passes on everything from plane blades and chisels to kitchen knives and straight razors.
- Substantial Feel: Sitting at a solid 25mm overall height, it provides ideal hand clearance off the bench while delivering the hefty, premium presence of an heirloom tool.
Which Diamond Spray Do You Need?
This strop is offered with 0.5, 1 or 3 micron spray treatment, or with no spray. The 6 micron spray described below is sold separately and is not a selectable strop variant.
To get the most out of your Shell Cordovan strop, match your diamond spray micron size to the finest stone in your sharpening setup:
0.5 Micron Diamond Spray
- Your Stone Setup: Finished on 12,000+ super fine stone
- The Honest Truth: The ultimate level of edge refinement, and if we're being honest, largely unnecessary for 99% of woodworking tasks. At 0.5 microns, you aren't really making a chisel or plane iron cut wood any better; you are simply helping the dense leather strip away microscopic burr remnants left behind by fine stones.
- Who It's Actually For: If you're a straight edge razor honer, a sushi chef working with soft fish, or someone who simply enjoys chasing the absolute limits of sharpness for the fun of it like myself, this is your grit. For general joinery and cabinetmaking? Stick to 1 micron or bare leather. Your timber won't know the difference, trust us.
1 Micron Diamond Spray (≈ 16,000 Grit)
- Your Stone Setup: Finished on a 6,000 to 8,000 grit stone (Or you want to take your 12,000 grit edge to its absolute limit)
- What it Does: The ultimate refiner. Diamond cuts through the hardest modern steels to remove the finest scratches, transforming a high end edge into a hair severing mirror finish.
3 Micron Diamond Spray (≈ 8,000 Grit)
- Your Stone Setup: Finished on a 2,000 to 3,000 grit stone.
- What it Does: Rapid polish with bite. It quickly refines medium stone scratches into a bright bevel that bites effortlessly into tough materials
- 6 Micron Diamond Spray
- Your Stone Setup: Finished on a 1,000 grit standard stone.
-
What it Does: Fast touch-ups. Perfect for a quick 30 second bench refresh when you don't want to bring out your water stones to restore a dulling working edge
Bare Leather (No Spray)
- Your Stone Setup: Finished on 8,000 to 12,000 grit stones.
- What it Does: Removes the remnants of any burrs leftover from sharpening using the natural draw of the leather itself. Without altering the stones scratch pattern.
