PROTRUSION STOPS

Save time setting up your blades and get straight to sharpening!

Let's speed up sharpening!

Creating protrusion stops can present a complex task. Our solution is a stop that places the honing guide in the perfect position every time. All variations of the protrusion stop are made from a black, Carbon Fibre reinforced PLA plastic, printed in the workshop!Β Furthermore, it's conveniently compact and lightweight, finding a perfect place in your toolbox.

Important Info

All measurements for these protrusion stops have been taken directly from the manufacturers guidelines.

It’s perfectly normal for these angles to vary a few degrees here and there. Especially if the honing guide encourages the blade to be registered on the underside of the blade, such as the upper section on Eclipse Honing guides, and the Saker Honing guides, this will slightly alter the protrusion of different thickness blades.

On honing guides where the blade is registered on the top on the blade, either using a flat reference such as the Richard Kell guide, or using dovetailed jaws like the Lie Nielsen or Veritas, the thickness of the blade will not alter the protrusion and every blade should end up more or less the same angle.

But all that aside, what these protrusion stops promise is consistency. If your blade happens to be sharpened at 29Β° instead of 30Β°, which will make next to no difference in the performance of the blade. Every time you set it up using the protrusion stop, it will always be sharpened at that angle.

This increases the speed of your sharpening, it prevents you from grinding away unnecessary material, and overall it just makes the sharpening process easier.

What angles do the stops work to?

If you have a Lie-Nielsen style honing guide, our protrusion stop will give you the options of setting your chisel or plane toΒ 25, 30, 35, or 50 degrees.

If you have an Eclipse style honing guide, our protrusion stop will give you the options of setting your chisel or plane toΒ 25 or 30 degrees.

If you have a Saker style honing guide, our protrusion stop will give you the options of setting your chisel or plane toΒ 25, 30, 35, or 40 degrees.

---

If you have a Veritas (Combo) style honing guide, our protrusion stop will give you the options of setting your chisel or plane toΒ 25 or 30 degrees.

If you have a Veritas (Pair) style honing guide, our protrusion stops will give you the options of setting your chisel or plane to 25, 30, 35, or 40 degrees using two blocks.

What's the difference between the different Veritas Stops?

A Veritas Honing Guide has 2 different jaws for setting your plane blade or chisel. An 'Upper' and a 'Lower' jaw.

This makes the Honing Guide more versatile for more blade sizes.

But this also means that when you set your blade into one of those jaws, you're adjusting the height of the blade in relation to the pivot point. This means you need a different protrusion distance to get the same angle for sharpening.

This is where our Protrusion Stop variations come in.

  • If you only ever use the lower jaws of your Veritas honing guide, get the 'Veritas (for lower jaws)' Protrusion Stop.
  • If you only ever use the upper jaws of your Veritas honing guide, get the 'Veritas (for upper jaws)' Protrusion Stop.
  • If you use both jaws regularly and want all the angles available to you, get the 'Veritas (Pair)' Protrusion Stop set.
  • And if you use both jaws regularly but only need the 25 and 30 degree angles, get the 'Veritas (Combo)' Protrusion Stop.
  • Made from Carbon Fibre Reinforced PLA

We chose this material as not only does it hold up incredibly well to high stresses, but it can also withstand a blade being pushed into it time and time again.

  • Designed for Lie-Nielsen, Eclipse, Veritas, & Saker Style Honing Guides

Different honing guides use different distances from the blade to ensure the correct angle when sharpening. Our variations ensure accurate sharpening every time.

  • Waterproof, Durable, and Effective

Wooden stops swell with moisture, chip when dropped, and are never truly accurate. Our protrusion stops are made to last and are designed with millimetre precision.

How do I use a Protrusion Stop?

A Protrusion Stop is one of those things that you didn't realise you needed until you see it in action. What's more, setting it up is as simple as clamping your blade into it's honing guide and butting up the edge to the correct angle. Check out the video below for more info!
