Apparently we can't get enough of making mallets. So we made ourselves a new one!
Introducing the 'Carving Mallet'.
Made from the same high quality materials as our standard mallets (Leadwood and Olivewood), these carving mallets not only incorporate a new form factor to our range, but they have a hidden trick up their sleeves too.
In order to ensure the join between the Leadwood and the Olivewood is as strong as possible, we've added a huge 16mm diameter steel rod through the centre of this otherwise unassuming (but beautiful) tool.
Not only does this create a long lasting bond, but the rod substantially increases the weight of the mallet, giving every swing that extra bit of power.
For comparison, our standard mallet weighs approximately 640g, our small mallet weighs approximately 372g, and this Carving Mallet (that uses the same handle design as the small mallet) weights approximately 564g!
Finally, the design is capped off with one of our signature 25mm Emblem Coins.

A Functional Work of Art: Outstanding Balance and Craftsmanship
This is definitely a luxury item, but after doing a bit of chiseling with it, I can say it feels fantastic in the hand. The balance is outstanding, making every strike feel controlled and effortless. I especially love the way the mallet stands upright and seems to be waiting for you to pick it up—it’s both practical and visually appealing.

So worth it!
I purchased the plans online and used some spare cherry I had to complete the project.
Having the plans and the detailed step-by-step online course made this project very approachable for a hobbyist, and I learned a lot of skills along the way that I will use in other projects in the future.
I appreciated the way Matt suggested multiple options for completing some of the steps which made the project more approachable. I had to make a few compromises with available tools (I only had a Stanley 78 rebate plane without the fence that I had to use like a shoulder plane), and I used the KM dovetail jig to overcome the quality of my saw/sawing, and the Cosman offset method for cutting the pins. I do have a Veritas low-angle jack plane that I used for all the dimensioning and shooting, which worked amazingly.
