How To Edge Joint The Panels

In this lesson, I show you a new way to edge joint two panels together. But be warned, this is not an excuse for laziness! Watch the video to find out more.

This lessons objectives:

  • New method of edge jointing timber
  • How to produce a spring joint
  • How to make use of a cambered blade
  • How to glue and locate the panels

In the previous series where we made a dovetailed box, I taught you the ‘difficult' way to edge joint two piece of wood together. This was mostly to help you develop skills when using a plane such as correct balance, pressure, and use of the cambered blade. However there is an ‘easier' way to produce an edge joint…

This involves planing the two pieces of timber simultaneously in the vice so that once taken out and assembled, any error in squareness should be cancelled out. However this is not always the case for a number of reasons, as discussed in the video.

This is why I taught you the difficult way to edge joint board first. Because it gives you a thorough understanding of everything you need to create a seamless edge joint so that you do not take this method for granted; as many of my students have tried and failed to in the past.

Ensure your plane is sharp and well set up for this step. You cannot achieve a seamless edge joint with a blunt blade, and a heavy cut. Each and every pass needs to be deliberate and do not rush anything.

Make the most of the supporting resources below if you are struggling to get your plane to create nice shavings.

Also, be sure to consult the tool list for this project if you are looking to upgrade your current tools, or are looking to start off on the right foot. The list includes various options to suit different budgets and also distinguishes between hand tool and power tool based methods.

This video teaches you how to create a cambered blade for your handplane. An indispensable addition when edge jointing.

How to Setup a Plane

There's no point in having a razor sharp blade in your plane if it's setup wrong. This lesson will get those wispy shavings flying!

How to Edge Joint Timber

This dedicated video on edge jointing shows how to produce a seamless, sprung edge joint entirely by hand.
