Cutting The Shelf Rebates

In this part of the project, we will be focusing on fitting the shelf within the carcass. This will involve some sizing of material and rebate cutting on both sides of the shelf.

This lessons objectives:

  • How to size the shelf
  • How to layout rebates
  • How to cut the rebates and avoid breakout
  • How to cut the notch on the front of the shelf

This is the first time we will be cutting across the grain when using a rebate plane. So paying attention to the behavior and sound of the grain as you cut it is very important. Ensure you have the back edge of the shelf fully supported before attempting to take the first cut.

You can of course cut these rebates using a few different methods. All of these were shown in the Box Project when I demonstrated how to cut the rebates on the lid.

The first option is to use a rebate plane as shown in this video. The second is using a shoulder plane with a solid wood fence to run it against. The third option is to use a router table with a rebate cutter. With all of these methods, ensure the back edge of the material is fully supported!

I'm commonly asked what Router Table I use. If you'd like to find out more information about it, click the button below.
